  9. I suppose we should raise the
  10. question why are we nostalgic to
  11. Commodore, why do some of us get so
  12. angry when someone says my XYZ is
  13. better then your Commodore because
  14. it has ZZZZZ
  15.  
  16. I question myself many times why it
  17. is I preferred Commodore to the
  18. Spectrum, the Dragon 32, the Oric or
  19. any other number of 8-bit systems. I
  20. suppose I was subconsciously drugged
  21. by the marketing department of
  22. Commodore, although the press seemed
  23. to be all over the Vic20 and the
  24. colour graphics and real typewriter
  25. look and feel meant to me it was a
  26. winner over the Spectrum.

  28. The Commodore 64 won me over firstly
  29. because I already had a Vic20 and it
  30. looked the same (physically) but the
  31. sound processor and hardware sprites
  32. seemed to be something special, I
  33. wasn't technically aware why this
  34. was; only that it sounded better
  35. then any other 8-bit system and some
  36. of the games looked bright and
  37. colourful!

  39. Would I have made the same choice
  40. now if these machines were lined up
  41. side by side and I had the benefit
  42. of hindsight; I have asked this
  43. myself a number of times, I know
  44. some spectrum games were better and
  45. never released on the Commodore 64
  46. same for the Amstrad and Oric etc.
  47. The BBC micro had a superb version
  48. of defender and I am still wowed
  49. when playing this version. Even
  50. tanks on the Atari 2600 seemed
  51. better than the Commodore version,
  52. however I would have still picked
  53. the C64. I am not saying mine is
  54. better than yours but the SID sound
  55. to me is special, the colour pallet
  56. of the C64 while not perfect is well
  57. thought out and immediately
  58. noticeable when you see a screen
  59. shot you realise it's a C64

  61. Nostalgia can mean a number of
  62. things to a number of people, it's a
  63. childhood look back with rose tinted
  64. glasses for me, and I have no shame
  65. admitting that, yes some games on
  66. other systems were better some coin
  67. op conversions were poor on the C64
  68. and yes it had problems with the
  69. slow tape drive (not to mention the
  70. expense) and a proprietary tape unit
  71. and slowwwww loading times, (well
  72. until speed loaders came out.) I
  73. played Elite on the BBC and never
  74. liked any other version! the C64{SHIFT-*}s
  75. conversion was slow and flickery and
  76. quite poor.

  78. Sitting with the family for tea,
  79. nights over at grandparents getting
  80. away with murder and stopping up all
  81. night, these are all nostalgic
  82. memories, fondness, my only problem
  83. with Commodore was the Amiga 4000
  84. this machine should have been so
  85. much more, and I wish now I
  86. purchased my friends 3000 instead of
  87. a new 4000, or had at least re read
  88. some of the reviews of the launch.

  90. Did Commodore get it right all the
  91. time

  93. NO! many times they failed and
  94. fudged systems due to time
  95. restraints or expense, that's down
  96. to the management of the company,
  97. but when I see the Commodore logo I
  98. am drawn to whatever it is to find
  99. out more.
